J24
The J24 class is the most active one design class in Atlantic Canada. The J24 is the most popular keel boat in history. It has produced many of the most famous yachtsman in the world and is known as the cradle of America’s Cup crew. The class has grown significantly here over the past few years and there are now more than 30 in the region. The class executive has set a goal of enlarging the fleet to at least 50 boats within two years.
With more than 5,000 boats built since the mid-1970s there are many two-fours to choose from. Its entirely feasible to obtain a boat capable of competing in the Atlantic Canada fleet for $5,000 or less. For a small investment you get a great daysailer/short distance cruiser and a challenging racing boat. Events in Halifax and Shediac regularly draw 10 to 20 boats and sometimes more. For the talented, success can lead to qualifications for the J24 Worlds, an opportunity to measure yourself against the best on the planet.
The local class is notable for the enthusiasm of its participants. Everyone is welcome and everyone has a chance. There is loads of support for beginners from other fleet members. Just ask anyone in the fleet how they help each other through teaching sailing technique and repairing broken equipment. This season, the fleet even has a boat for anyone who wants a taste of J24 competition or would like a test drive before deciding to buy. It’s called J Slocum after the famous Nova Scotian who was the first person to sail around the world alone. It is kept at RNSYS and is available with very few strings attached. It’s a very good boat that is more than suitable for regatta cpompetition.
